When we frown for any reason, we gather the tissue between our eyebrows into a fold. In some of us, this causes a chronic furrow. This produces a frustrated, discouraged, angry look on our face that can be distracting to others, and a bother to ourselves. Dynamic movement of the facial skin which continuously creates a crease in the same location may also produce a permanent "etching" into the skin. Horizontal lines on the forehead and crows feet around the eyes often makes the person look tired and aged, especially during dynamic expression.
Now you can eliminate these and other expression lines without surgery and without scars, by a simple treatment with Botox.

What is Botox® Cosmetic?
Botox ® Cosmetic (Botox) is the trade name of Botulinum Type A, a purified toxin produced by the
bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In large amounts, this toxin blocks the nerve impulses to muscles,
causing a form of paralysis called botulism.
By using extremely small doses of Botox, injected directly into a specific muscle, only the action of that
muscle will be paralysed. Therefore, the problem that muscle causes, like a twitch, spasm or frown line,
will be stopped.
Why is Botox so helpful?
Botox is the only way, short of drastic surgery, to slow down the formation of wrinkles caused by the
muscle movements of facial expression. Its use on the forehead and for frown lines gives a more open
look to the face that previously required major surgery. Younger people can benefit by regular use to
prevent their unwanted frowning or forehead wrinkling from getting “etched” into their skin.
Complementary procedures such as Restylane and Laser PhotoFacial can be performed to create a
younger overall appearance without surgery. Dr. Rubinstein strives to give a natural look to the face while
maintaining the wrinkle improvement from Botox.
Where do you inject the Botox?
The frown line between the eyebrows is caused by the action of a muscle called the corrugator. You can
feel this as a thickening just below the inside of your eyebrows when you purposefully make yourself
frown
Injecting Botox directly into this corrugator muscle stops your ability to draw your eyebrows together when
you frown. Once the muscle is paralysed, it cannot contract, and the frown line gradually fades away.
Botox is also effective in the treatment of crow's feet, forehead wrinkles, and neck folds. It can also help
with a “puckered lip” a bit, and is very helpful with the “bubble wrap” puckered chin look.
Will it last?
The actual treatment takes only a few minutes and the Botox takes effect in one to two weeks. Gradually
over three to five months the Botox effect will fade, and the muscle action will return. When the frown line
starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired result. We
recommend treatments every four months to maintain maximum improvement.
How has Botox been tested?
Botox has been use since 1980 for the treatment of strabismus (lazy eye), and blepharospasm
(uncontrolled eye blinking). The use of Botox for forehead wrinkles was pioneered in 1989 by Dr.
Carruthers of Vancouver. A major study of this technique was completed in 1995, and a review published
in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Botox Cosmetic received official FDA approval in
2002. Dr. Rubinstein conducted a Botox research project with Allergan, the manufacturer of Botox.
Are there any side effects?
The side effects of Botox are related to the local injection of the solution. There will be a slight discomfort
from the needle entering the skin, and a small chance of a bruise at the site of the injection. There are no
reports of damage to the eye, with injections to the eyelid. There have been no permanent side effects
from the use of Botox. Less than 1% of patients will develop a slight lowering or ptosis of one eyelid. This
is temporary and may not even be noticed by the patient.
Does Botox hurt?
Very tiny needles are used for the injections, and most patients tolerate the small pinpricks very well with
no anesthetic. About half of our patients choose to use one of several topical anesthetic creams which
are applied shortly before treatment. This makes the treatment almost painless. Just ask our staff.
Who Can Perform Botox?
Anyone with a professional medical license can perform an injection of Botox. HOWEVER - Skillful Botox
treatment can only be performed by experienced clinicians who properly dilute and inject authentic Botox
(R) Cosmetic developed and distributed in the US by Allergan, a Pharmaceutical company in Irvine, CA.

Can Botox help anything else?
Botox can also be used to reduce sweating of the underarms, palms, and soles. For patients with severe
sweating who do not respond to prescription antiperspirants, Botox can be the answer to ruined clothes
and embarrassment. Injections need to be given approximately twice a year. Botox has also been found
to help reduce the frequency and intensity of tension and migraine headaches.

Question: When should I return for Botox treatments?
Answer: Don't wait until your wrinkles return. As soon as you feel muscle movement, return for a treatment. Eventually, this may extend the desired effect of Botox as well as prevent the formation of deeper lines.
Consider complimentary cosmetic procedures such as laser PhotoRejuvenation on your return visits to maintain a youthful appearance. This may prevent or delay unnecessary cosmetic surgery for years!
